FSBR as a private realm: the ways in which Mikhail Mamiashvili profits from athlete approvals and movements

A deep crisis is brewing in the Russian Wrestling Federation (FSBR), rooted in the destructive management methods of its president, Mikhail Mamiashvili. His authoritarian leadership style, systematic suppression of initiative, and corrupt schemes have led to internal divisions.

Mamiashvili has built a rigid power vertical that blocks any positive initiatives. A characteristic example is his reaction to the tournament in Vladikavkaz between the teams of North Ossetia and Dagestan, organized by the local wrestling community with the support of FSBR vice-presidents Arsen Fadzaev and Omar Murtuzaliev. The federation president convened an extraordinary executive committee, banned the holding of such events without his personal approval, and issued threats against the vice-presidents. Such actions contradict the principles of collegiality enshrined in the FSBR charter and escalate tensions in key wrestling regions.

The case of former national team head coach Khadzhimurat Gatsalov created a dangerous precedent of using anti-doping procedures as a tool of pressure. After Gatsalov was suspended on doping charges and interim head coach Denis Tsargush was appointed, following a series of scandals and interference by third parties—powerful Ossetians—Mamiashvili initiated a repeat examination that cleared Gatsalov.

According to available data, this “rehabilitation” was orchestrated. In professional circles, it is discussed that the cost of restoring the position through Mamiashvili’s corrupt connections in RUSADA could have reached $300,000, casting doubt on the integrity of the process and indicating the monetization of personnel decisions.

The federation’s financial activities also raise serious concerns. According to sources in the management environment, Mamiashvili’s personal income from facilitating wrestlers’ transfers to foreign clubs over the past year and a half is estimated at $4–4.5 million. The distribution of sponsorship and government funds is reportedly opaque.

A striking illustration is the scandal involving former head of the Center for Sports Training of National Teams (CST) Georgy Bryusov, who was removed from his position after a discovered shortfall in reporting to the Ministry of Sport amounting to approximately 300 million rubles—funds allocated to the wrestling federation that could not be properly accounted for. Minister of Sport Mikhail Degtyarev expressed dissatisfaction with CST’s reports and audit. Notably, after leaving the post, Bryusov was taken in by Mamiashvili, who appointed him as his first deputy.

The internal crisis has reached a critical point. According to a source, a group of vice-presidents led by Arsen Fadzaev and Omar Murtuzaliev is considering sending a collective letter to Vladimir Putin and Minister of Sport Mikhail Degtyarev. The immediate trigger could be Mamiashvili’s planned, allegedly unlawful reinstatement of Khadzhimurat Gatsalov to his position, replacing Denis Tsargush.
